One day, a man entered the Shelter looking for a dog to adopt. As soon as he entered,
he became fond of a 3-year-old pit bull named Merril. But when it came time to go
home, Merril refused to be separated from her best friend.
Merril and her friend, Tako, arrived together at the Shelter. The volunteers’ Shelter
knew nothing about their owner. But they did know that these two were real friends.
They were always together and wouldn’t stop crying if they got separated.
Soon enough, the refuge understood how deep their relationship was. When Merril
arrived there, she had a horrible urinary tract infection, and she needed surgery to save her life. Tako was very restless and anxious because of that.

After the operation ended, They put Merril in a recovery room to stay alone and heal
faster. But it was challenging; the two dogs wouldn’t stop crying at each other. They
did not want to be separated in any way. So they allow Tako to stay with her friend
Merril. The volunteers couldn’t believe how friendly they were. They knew it was
challenging to adopt two dogs simultaneously, hoping to find a suitable home for both.
One day, a man walked into the Shelter to adopt a dog. The man immediately wanted
Merril as soon as he saw her. After filling out all the paperwork, it was time to bring
her home, but as soon as Merril was taken out of the cage while Tako was still inside
it, she began howling and wouldn’t stop. The man needed clarification. The volunteers
told him that Tako and Merril were best friends and didn’t want to be away from each
other.

The man understood their situation and agreed to leave them together. Sadly, the man
couldn’t take the two dogs, so he chose another dog instead. The Shelter realized it
needed to change its strategy. They updated their listing on the website, and a
fantastic volunteer named Jody offered to foster them until the best friends found a
home. It wasn’t long before a family from San Jose stumbled across the Shelter’s
website and fell in love with Tako and Merrill’s story.
They meet the pops and instantly want to make them family. It was time to bring them
to their new home, and they were excited to live together. But, because of Tako’s old
age, she had quite a few health problems; she had asthma, and dental disease left her
with only four teeth. However, a month later, when the family took Tako to the vet, they
realized that things weren’t so good for Tako.
The vet informed the family that her heart was enlarged and her lungs were filled with
fluid; if something weren’t done for Tako, she would die. Immediately, Tako was put on
medications while she was scheduled for a visit with a specialist. However, they knew
because of her age, she might never recover. But they gave her a fighting chance and
showered her with lots of attention. And Merril wouldn’t leave her best friend.
Soon enough, Tako began to feel better; her health became stable, and she was no
longer at risk. Tako still had respiratory problems, and she needed to take anti-seizure
drugs and steroids for her lungs for the rest of her life.
However, that wouldn’t stop her from playing with her best friend and family. And
because Merril is a young adult, she’s energetic and active; she enjoys rolling around
Tako. Though Tako can’t play like Merril, she still finds a way to play with her. Tako did
everything possible to live next to her dear friend, and despite the pain or ailments of
her age, she lived longer than expected.
On May 6, the same year she was adopted, Tako passed away. The family felt sorry
and, of course, couldn’t handle Merril’s sadness. The family did everything possible to
make her well. She now has another partner, but surely she will never forget Tako.
Many people say that animals have no feelings and only act on instinct. However,
Merril and Tako have shown the contrary.
